As part of the City’s pre-Arbor Day initiative, a total of 78 trees have been planted along Kruskal Avenue in Bellville, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to revitalise the Bellville CBD.
This greening project was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Recreation and Parks Department, Urban Planning and Design and the Newlands Nursery, as part of the City’s broader urban renewal and sustainability programme.
A ceremonial tree planting was held last week to highlight the importance of planting ahead of the winter season, allowing the trees to settle and improve their chances of thriving in spring.
The 78 trees were carefully selected and planted in strategic locations along Kruskal Avenue. The mix includes indigenous and hardy species well-suited to the urban environment.
‘Trees not only beautify our city, but they improve the air quality and contribute to the physical and mental health of those who work and live in these areas. Initiatives like this are a great example of how we can work together to build a greener and more sustainable Cape Town. Well done to all involved and thank you to those who will continue to care for these trees as they grow,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
The Newlands Nursery supplied the trees, while the local horticultural team from the Recreation and Parks Department supported transport, planting and will oversee ongoing maintenance. This initiative demonstrates the City’s strong commitment to interdepartmental collaboration in delivering environmental and community benefits.
The City encourages its residents and local businesses to help care for the newly planted trees.
